Process for foreign pharmacists to register in South Africa (SAPC)

Pharmacy profession in South Africa is so in demand. There has been a scarcity of pharmacists in South Africa for a while, and govt. is taking adequate steps required to surmount this lacking. The pharmacy council is doing its best to spread awareness about the importance of medicines and hospitals in rural areas as most people in rural still go for the traditional medications which is solely because of the lack of knowledge and awareness. And by expanding the universities to these areas, it increases the pass out rate of pharmacists per annum. South Africa on other hand also allows pharmacists from foreign countries (who obtained their degrees from countries other than South Africa) to register with SAPC and work in South Africa.
If you are a qualified pharmacist outside South Africa and wailing to register as a pharmacist in South Africa, here is the procedure to follow. Before going into the details, let me introduce you to FWMP or FWM.
The Foreign Workforce Management (FWM) of South Africa
Foreign workforce management of South Africa is a govt. body that serves all foreigners who are willing to work in South Africa. All applications by Healthcare Professionals for employment in South Africa must first be sent to the National Department of Health.
The FWM division is managed by Mr.Hennie Groenewald who is the Director: Workforce Management. Application to the FWM is a mere presentation of your candidature for consideration and does not serve as an invitation to depart to South Africa, should you still be abroad.

Here are the steps to follow to get registered as a pharmacist in South Africa.

Before entering the Republic

1.    First obtain the qualification of B.pharmacy/ M.pharmacy, Pharma.D

2.    You need to Clear IELTS with a minimum band score of 6.0,  check this http://www.infosapharmacy.blogspot.com/2012/10/ielts-to-get-work-permit-to-south-africa.html

3.    You need to arrange the following documents.

·       Birth certificate

·       Passport

·       Grade 12 or any equivalent certificate’s marks lists

·       Marks lists of every semester of the B.pharmacy/ M.pharmacy, Pharma.D

·       Provisional certificate of the course completed

·       Convocation certificate of the course completed

·       IELTS report card

·       Filled application form downloaded from the site of fwmp, LINK: http://www.doh.gov.za/docs/misc/2011/fwmapplication.pdf

·       Certified copies of each and every document required.

·       A covering letter stating the subjects covered in your course and your project(if any) experience(if any)

4.    Scan the entire documents and mail them to the fwmp.

5.    Mail ids: ZelnoB@health.gov.za , MachaB@health.gov.za

6.    It takes a time of 45 days approximately to get the result from the fwmp.

7.    Meanwhile keep them reminding about your application through mails. And be patient.

8.    Receive the letter from the fwmp.

9.    With the letter you can apply for visa.

    Visa requirements:
·       Valid passport with at least 3 empty pages.

·       Letter from fwmp

·       Filled application form of South African visit permit

·       Valid Police clearance certificate(pcc)

·       Valid health certificates regarding your mental conditions and any diseases like tuberculosis, hepatitis etc.,

·       Forms are downloaded from the site

·       Bank statements of the candidate/ If any sponsors are available to you in South Africa, id/work permit of the person.

·       His/her bank statements 6 months.

·       A letter certified from your sponsor stating that you are his/her responsibility during your visit in South Africa.

·       A certified letter about the sponsor residence.

·       Confirmed two ways flight ticket to the destination or a ticket held to certain dates.

Kindly take note:

Don’t depend on any agents. As there are many who got dumped in the middle of the process.
It’s always better to go in your own way. Do things by yourself. Just to motivate: you are a grown up adult, as you are about to enter next stage of your life, as an adult you should be able to do all these things by yourself. Going through an agency is risky and not always reliable.

Tips in embassy:

Convince the officer pleasingly explaining the purpose of visit and about the letter received by you.

Don’t be afraid of the questions asked, answer them with confidence.

Confidence plays a key role.

After entering the Republic

·       You need to acquire SAQA certificate (South African Qualification Authority) first.

·       You need to extend your visa as soon as possible, as you will be given one extension only, you should use it wisely. As it takes a bit of time for the extension process, it is advised to do your extension as soon as you enter the republic.

·       Apply for the council (SAPC) with all the documents including your SAQA and IELTS.

·       Keep on following up about the status of your application.

·       You should receive the approval in few days.

·       Now pay the examination fee and fix your examination venue.

·       Write your exam on the date fixed by SAPC and wait for your results.

·       Standard of the professional exams is pretty high and if you know your stuff, it is not difficult to pass. But, let me warn you, very few people made it on their first time, so please don’t take these exams easily. Mark my words, if you don’t study well you won’t make it first time.
All the best to one and all, thanks for visiting my site. Have you any doubts; please feel free to leave a comment, we are very happy to help.

I would like to thank my dear brother Ram Dilip Nuthalapti for this guest post.

THANK YOU

  17. Dear is it necessary for every individual to do internship before starting career as a professional.
I mean i recently did my pharmacy and now i am doing a job in pharmacy.
Is it necessary for me too ?
Moreover i wanted to ask that is there any special time of the year when the exams occur and when you will be alloted internships ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. it is compulsory for anyone to do internship in sa....even if u were a holder of doctorate u should start your career form internship....industrial experience is not going work out here....
yeah there is a specific time to write exams...generally every year in the months of june and october the exams are conducted sometimes they may be slightly altered just like this year ie., this time the exams are going to be conducted in may instead of june...
lastly the general timing of appointments of interns and community service pharmacists is jan but if you have found any vacancy of your position they will allot you even in the mid-year also...so not to worry about the postings but you have to take care about the vacancies...

    2. Thanks brother
Please also let me know that whether the interns get any pays during internship or cummunity service ?
And about how much ? And are there equal oppurtunities throughout south africa for pharmacist interns and professionals ?

    3. you will get salary form your internship dude...the details of the salaries are already posted u can go through them if you have more doubts you are welcome even after verifying that...you need not to think of such things bro....you will have opportunities for all throughout the country...

u will be registered as a pharmacist after the completion of ur internship n community service also...
then you hv to get the PR in southafrica and then you will be eligible to open a pharmacy

I hold b.pharm degree from India and have experience of 2 years here as a pharmacist in dispensing medicines to patients. Do I have to apply for a student visa or can i directly go for work permit? If work permit, then what is the minimum time they offer work permit, i mean number of years? and if i m not wrong during this time, I will have to prepare for the registered pharmacist exam and pass it out in order to work there as a pharmacist. right?
    thanking in advance. cheers mate..

    1. neither u apply for student visa nor a work permit, no matter how experienced you are, you need to pass the SAPC professional exams in order to get registered with the council, you are supposed to apply for a visiting visa and write your exams here, and if u pass then you'll be placed and given a contract of 1 year during internship, so u got to make work permit only after passing your exams and finding a place to work. for community service you will have a contract of 1 year. and after finishing your community service you will get a contract of 3 years as a pharmacist...NOTE: you cannot work here without passing your exams and registering with the council

Extension period can u give little clarity of this

    ReplyDelete

    1. sure,

visit permit is given for a time period of 3 to 6 months....and as i said there will be only one extension possible with the visit permit and this extension will also be given for 3 to 6 months...that means, u'll get an extension of ur permit for 3 to 6 months...that means u can stay in South Africa for 3 to 6 months more with ur extended visa...so in total, initially u stay for 3 to 6 months right, and then with an extension u can stay for 3 to 6 months more....so in total it will be 6 months to 12 months of time....maximum possible period

      hope u understood...

  78. How is the life in south africa, schooling for children, safety, cost of living. Can we do job in urban areas or only in rural areas.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Please clear my doubts above

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. sorry for late reply....

life is good in SA, schooling will be a problem only if u r working in a rural area...though schools will be there but u won't find them good....as long as u work in urban areas, ur life will be gr8...no problems....but if u go deep rural, then it will be one hell of a hectic life....cost of living is ok....u can save a lot of money if u work rural...dats because u get a lot of rural allowances...i mean u get paid more than a pharmacist that works urban side...u can work any where u want as long as the position in d hospital is available...u can even work in private sector in urban or rural...if u have a family and u want to work only in urban, then u must find a vacancy in govt. clinic that is in urban...or u can go to retail pharmacies looking for job...u can do ur internship either in govt or private, so there u have a choice, but community service, u are allowed to work only in govt.

      hope this info helps

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you are preparing for last two months and want to apply in jan, why don't you try and write exams in march?? U know SAPC exams are held twice a year, so if you write in april/may and if you fail 1 or 2 exams you can complete them in oct/nov exams....so that you don't have to wait and waste time until 2015...besides you still got time to prepare for may/april exams...

      Delete
  89. Wat u said is right but unless we got grip on the syllabus it is no way to pass the test ie one reason n to get approval frm fwm it will take 2 months n also i must get my credentials approval frm saqa this all takes time

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. ya well, if u r not confident enough with the subject then i suggest u to write in oct/nov...it all depends on ur confidence...and its your decision at the end that matters...besides i don't think u'll be able to write ur exams in april/may coz with the present situation in SA seems a bit sluggish, but do apply soon and try to get approval, u can write in oct/nov....i second ur decision....all the best...
